To celebrate Pride Month, Terrace’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community will gather for their first annual Pride Prom.
Organized by the Terrace Pride Pals group, the prom was initially planned for October 2022, but, due to timing, Oli Sherrill says the group decided to repurpose the idea to celebrate Pride Month.
The free event for anyone 19 and older will feature music, food and an art competition.
Sherrill says the group's original plans were to hold an all ages event, but due to a bit of confusion with booking the venue, they had to exclude those under the legal drinking age. To compensate, they put out a notice to schools in Terrace, Thornhill, Kitimat, and Hazelton for children to create pride-themed artwork. Attendees of the prom will then vote on those art pieces with the top three winning donations from Pride Pals, Misty River Books and TransCare B.C.
Created in at the end of 2019, Pride Pals started out as a student effort according to Sherrill. Through COVID-19 lockdowns, the group hosted Zoom meetings for people to talk, watch movies and play games together. With looser restrictions, Sherrill says they now aim to hold more in person events.
Marking their first large in person gathering, Pride Prom will take place at the Sherwood Mountain Brewhouse on June 10 at 7 p.m.
