With the temperature continuing to drop, the Terrace Fire Department spoke about some of the most common causes of fires during the winter months and how to avoid them.
Terrace Fire Chief John Klie said residential fires during this time of year commonly start in uncleaned chimneys and wood stoves.
Klie says that cleaning dry and seasoned wood can prevent the build up of creosote, a byproduct of wood burning that can be highly combustible. Ensuring that your chimney is clean at the start and end of each heating season can also help prevent fires from breaking out.
Staying aware of the hazards with each form of household heating is key. With electric heaters, it’s important to keep them separate from flammable materials like curtains or clothes, and make sure it’s connected to a stable energy source. While furnace filters should be cleaned and yearly checks on the electrical system should be made.
During the holiday season, Klie says that if you’re putting up a Christmas tree, you should keep it well hydrated and make sure there are no shortages in the lights. Burning candles should not be left unattended and also kept away from flammable materials.
As a reminder, Klie says to stay aware of the different hazards in your home and make sure that your smoke detector is functioning. It’s also encouraged that you discuss the hazards with your families and have a plan for what to do in the event of a fire.
