In Moncton, the Petitcodiac Causeway was been replaced with a bridge, and the river is restoring its tidal landscape. Closer to home, at the Tantramar River, plans have been released proposing a possible new dam structure across the mouth, to protect the Chignecto Isthmus from the threat of sea level rise. It’s a perfect time to reflect on the history of the tidal marsh, and the structures that humans have used to change them over the centuries.

The Tantramar Heritage Trust and Tidewater Books are teaming up tonight to offer Sackvillians a glimpse into that history with environmental historian Ronald Rudin, the author of Against the Tides: Reshaping Landscape and Community in Canada's Maritime Marshlands. In that book, Rudin tells the story of a seldom mentioned organization that played a large role in transforming the landscape in tidal regions around the Bay of Fundy: the Maritime Marshland Rehabilitation Administration.

CHMA spoke with Rudin from Baie-Ste-Anne, where he is researching his next project.
