Chiefswood Park has endured the effects of the pandemic for the past two years but the park is looking to get back into the swing of things this spring and summer season. The park is bringing events back to the Six Nations Community: the Spring Indigenous Market is set to headline the park later on May 28. The market will include over 45 different vendors, kids entertainment, food trucks and also a smoke dance competition.
Chiefswood Park Coordinator Shawna Porter said "they were excited about hosting the first annual Spring Market." Porter also talked about how the partnership came to be with the Woodland Cultural Centre who will co-host the event with the park.
"Initially, we had the Spring Indigenous Market idea kind of running and Woodland (Cultural Centre) reached out to us and asked if they could host their annual smoke dance competition and they picked the same date as the market," she said.
Events are not the only thing park staff are excited about: the park has added new features this year such as their eight new "Glamping Cabins" to its list of amenities as well as a new splash pad and mini putt. The park will also offer an AR/VR experience with storylines that focus on Haudenosaunee culture.
Porter also mentioned some things that park attendees might not know about the park: it is pet friendly; they have canoe, kayak and sup board rentals; and, in the winter, they offer tubes for sleigh riding and snow shoe rentals, a boat launch, pavillion and ground rentals for corporate wellness retreats as well as public shower facilities that are available at a pay per use rate.
