Smithers brings in trailer for unhoused community to use over winter

At a council meeting in Smithers, the topic of how to protect the unhoused population was discussed by Mayor Gladys Atrill, her council and bylaw officer Matt Davies.

The town decided to pay Summit Camps, a company that provide facilities and services for workers in camp communities, for a trailer to be brought into the space for the winter. The final decision was made in partnership with a myriad of businesses, social services and local charitable organizations.

There are about 20 people who have been living in tents in Veteran's Park, a green space in between the public library and the town office. This location was chosen last spring in an effort to mitigate the damage to tents as well as the harassment and verbal aggression towards the unhoused population.

The cold snap hit northern BC right on schedule this year, with the first snow fall in Smithers on Nov. 1.
