The Smithers Community Services Association is celebrating 50 years.

To celebrate, the SCSA is launching a year-long initiative called the WE Project. Activities included throughout the year will include a community mural, a newcomers guide, a new website, a more impactful presence at the Smithers Multicultural Festival and various engagement sessions.

As a not-for-profit organization, the SCSA has a simple mission: “Working together to enhance the quality of life in our communities”. The SCSA acts as a hub for the social programs, organizations and individuals who offer services for people struggling with addiction, experiencing homelessness, mental health struggles, job loss, or even newcomers looking for community.

The organization has a new Executive Director, Myung Lee, who told CICK that she's bringing a new perspective as an outsider to Smithers. "I came from Surrey, and I'm going to challenge the community [...] as a person who has a different perspective. So we're going to make some progress with all of our differences. At the end of the day, we want to have unity. That's what we are looking for."

The launch of the WE Project begins October 26th with an Open House at SCSA. The public is encouraged to stop by and have a piece of cake, or a hot cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and to enjoy a wagon ride by B&T Wagons. The event is from 11:30AM to 3:30PM at the Old Smithers Train Station, 3815 Railway Ave in Smithers.

"We would like to promote who we are as a non-profit organization, our programs, and who we are as individuals. Our campaign of “WE” will provide a space or place for gathering, engaging, sharing, and healing" Lee said.

This will be a great opportunity for us to receive feedback on any experiences people may have had with our programs and services. We hope to connect with more people in our community this year than ever before."

The Open House will showcase the organization's services, providing people with an opportunity to explore SCSA's building and learn more about what they do.
