A new blog has launched on Cortes Island, to promote everyday conservation efforts. Shannon Hogan, the development coordinator and conservation assistant for Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI), is spearheading the blog. FOCI is a non-profit society mandated to initiate conservation programs on Cortes.

Hogan describes what a "Small Act of Conservation" is: “You could … highlight your rock wall or your rock pile in your garden that might be building up. You'd be surprised how many creatures are crawling around in there and are calling at home.”

The FOCI blog is inspiring locals to take tiny steps for surprisingly effective results. One participant built a small pond and there are already tadpoles hatching in the pond. Shannon describes the details that make a difference,

“All it took was first fencing off the frog pond, so the ducks didn't get in it And then placing a bunch of pruned fruit tree branches into the pond so that the frogs had things to lay their eggs on”

Hogan encourages locals to interact with the new blog via Facebook or the website friendsofcortes.org. "Small Acts of Conservation" is an ongoing initiative.
