A total of seven sections of Six Nations Roads will have resurfacing work completed in the coming months.

Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) approved six sections of road resurfacing work to be tendered to Dufferin Construction Company during the Aug. 23 General Finance Meeting. An additional section of Chiefswood Road and Bicentennial Trail and 5th Line Road that was tendered last year to GIP Paving, will also have work completed.

The seven sections of road resurfacing work to be completed are as follows:

  • Road 135 (2nd Line between Tuscarora & Onondaga Rd.)
  • Road 136 (2nd Line between Onondaga & Cayuga Rd)
  • Road 144 (3rd Line between Chiefswood & Tuscarora Rd.)
  • Road 177 (6th Line between Cayuga & Oneida Rd.)
  • Road 273 (Cayuga Rd. between 2nd & 3rd Line)
  • Road 276 (Cayuga Rd. between 5th & 6th Line)
  • Road 245 (Chiefswood Rd between Bicentennial Trail and 5th Line) tendered last year.

Six Nations Director of Public Works Michael Montour says this work is long overdue and, after council's approval, some work will be ready to start as early as next week.

Montour spoke on the different ways the Six Nations community was engaged that guided Six Nations Public Works to determine which roads would be prioritized.

"I know roads have been one of the priorities as per the community questionnaire that was done earlier this year and we've done a lot of work around getting these tenders and roads prepped," he said.

"So last year we had a roads need study which really guided our selection of what roads to resurface this year. And as per that community questionnaire, when roads came back high on the list we made sure we put a lot of money aside last year for this year," he added.

Montour said the community participation "guides" the work and thanked the community.

Chief Mark Hill said in a media release he's pleased to see this work moving forward as the community road's health sits high on the community priority list.

"Like the rest of council, I am excited to have this project up and going. If we were able to, we would start this yesterday. This project is going to be a great one for our community.”

SNEC approved the six different sections of roads to be completed and awarding the project to Dufferin Construction company at an upset limit of $2,827,242.60. Montour says work on these projects will begin shortly.
