Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) are supporting two local sports teams as they both look to achieve big accomplishments.
During the general finance meeting for elected council on Aug. 15, the Ohsweken Redmen Fastball team and the Six Nations Rivermen Senior B lacrosse team both received support from council as both teams have big events coming up next month.
The Ohsweken Redmen are getting set to host the 2022 Ontario Challenge Cup, which will be held in Ohsweken on Sept. 23-25. The tournament is a qualifier for the 2023 ISC World fastpitch tournament which will be held in Denmark, Wisconsin.
Coun. Sherri Lynn Hill spoke on what the hopes are from the team to be able to host the big event.
“They’re (the team) just requesting some help to be able to put this tournament on but to also be professional, to give them some help and to also let the community know that this is going on” she said “ hopefully with this event going on we’ll be able to get more community members involved in the sense of selling stuff, because there's going to be a lot of people.”
Coun. Hazel Johnson also spoke on the event and the excitement about it coming to the community.
“I want to move on this that we will support them because I think that council has an opportunity here to make this a big event for the community.”
“I think it would give the community an opportunity to set up vendors like craft tables,” she added.
The Ohsweken Redmen were approved for financial funding from SNEC and a budget of $7,000 was approved for the team.
The Six Nations Rivermen Sr. B Lacrosse team is travelling to Edmonton, Alberta for the Presidents cup. The Rivermen were became Ontario Champions earlier this week when they swept The Oakville Rock in their best-of-five championship series. The Rivermen are now five time Ontario Series Lacrosse (OSL) champions.
Coun. Melba Thomas also spoke on these sports teams and how important they are for the community to serve as role models especially for the younger generation.
“I really think they’re role models and the community is certainly watching very closely. Specifically the children. We need role models in the community and we know that people can go in one direction or the other and hopefully it's in a positive direction that we look at these athletes as they’re providing us with entertainment.”
The rivermen were also approved for funding by SNEC for $15,000 to help and support them on their way to the presidents cup happening on Aug. 28- Sept. 3.
