A series of projects was completed this week on Ferry Island, with still more upgrades on the way.

Work started in 2021 with $30,000 in funding from the Northern Development Initiative Trust, and $15,000 from Terrace’s Community Reserve Fund. Recent upgrades were complete on Oct. 25, marked with widening and smoothing on a trail stretch between the east and west sides of the island.

Current upgrades to the municipal campground located between Terrace and Thornhill are part of a more expansive project for the island, according to the General Manager for Terrace Community Forest Kim Haworth.

Haworth explained that last year, upgrades mostly consisted of trail resurfacing on the south end of the island.

This year, more emergency work was done to trails following flood damage. Haworth also said that picnic shelters and bathrooms were made low-barrier for better wheelchair access, and a bridge on the east side of the island was replaced with steel structures.

To date, approximately $65,000 in upgrades has been completed, with the Terrace Community Forest taking the lead with funding for this year’s work, says Project Supervisor for Terrace Community Forest Carl Johansen.

“This project on Ferry Island is an ongoing project, and there’ll be more activities coming up next year,” Haworth says.
