Quadra Island RCMP say communication is vital when it comes to responding to incidents in remote communities like Cortes and Quadra Islands.
Const. Rebekah Draht is the media relations officer for the Quadra Island RCMP. CKTZ asked Draht about how Cortes residents may respond in violent situations, considering the remote nature of the community.
“Communication is number one,” Draht said.
Due to the remoteness of Cortes Island, it typically takes 40 minutes via boat for the Quadra RCMP to respond to incidents, but there are circumstances where that response may be expedited based on the nature of the threat.
“We have a very good relationship with the Coast Guard…we also have our ‘air H’… which is our helicopter… our goal at the end of the day is to get there as quickly as possible and make sure everybody is safe,” Draht said.
Draht reiterates the importance of communicating with the RCMP in those circumstances.
“I think the biggest thing is just, reach out to us,” Draht said.
