For more than seven years Lee Brain has been the Mayor of Prince Rupert, B.C. Following an announcement on Facebook, Brain won’t be seeking reelection come November to focus more of his time on family.
According to his Facebook post, Brain said "the last 7 years have seen some of the best and most challenging times in my life. Not only have I personally evolved since running for the first time at 28, but this community has significantly moved forward as well."
Brain went on to say he was looking forward to spending more time with his 10-month-old daughter, but will be focused on moving the community forward in his remaining months as mayor.
Brain also said how far Prince Rupert has come under his leadership noting how the community was "nearly bankrupt" in 2014 when he was first elected.
In his post Brain said how the community was struggling with an infrastructure backlog and legal fees associated with the abandoned pulp mill on Watson Island. But that has all changed over the past seven years.
"I can confidently say we've pulled Prince Rupert out of the proverbial 'hole' and have raised nearly $200 million in direct community investments, made Watson Island into a revenue generator, are tackling major infrastructure issues like our water supply upgrades – and have a list of over 30+ revitalization projects from new housing to waterfront developments happening all over the community," Brain wrote in his post.
Municipal elections in B.C. are slated for October 15th.
