Prince George athlete Oak Adams is looking forward to returning to the football field after COVID-19 cancelled the 2020-2021 Edmonton Huskies’ football season. “When you're playing at a high level, it’s hard to come back and play after you haven’t been playing but I've been staying in really good physical shape and I'm confident that I’ll be able to go back and play,” said Adams about the challenges of putting his football career on hold during COVID-19.
Adams reflects back on his first season with the Huskies in 2019 noting, “coming in, I really had to pave my own way, especially coming from a small town…it was honestly a lot of hard work and a lot of fighting.” Adams is one of just a handful of Huskies from BC.
Building close connections with coaches and other players on the team made it easier for Adams to adjust. The hard work paid off as his athletic abilities became an apparent advantage for the team. “As a first year, I was one of the fastest there”, states Adams. After the 2019-2020 season ended, Adams was awarded Junior Rookie Defensive Back of the Year.
When news of the COVID-19 pandemic broke, Adams revealed, “I was thinking to myself.. there's no way we are going to be able to travel.” With over 80 people making up the Huskies roster Adams adds, “[COVID-19] ended up shutting our season down bad but we are hoping to recover from it this year.”
When he’s not on the field, Adams coaches youth football within the PG community and is aware of the role he plays in inspiring other football players. “I just want young kids to know…especially young kids playing football…that there is football if they want to play after high school, and it is possible to do.”
