The mayor of the Municipalité de l’Ile-du-Grand-Calumet Serge Newberry has been cited in municipal ethics before the Commission municipale du Québec (CMQ) for events that allegedly occurred between November 2017 and June 2020.
Several facts are reproached to Newberry and divided into six paragraphs by the CMQ. The CMQ mentions that on various occasions he would have made gestures or made vexatious, humiliating or intimidating remarks about the former director general of the municipality. In a story published by CHIP-FM in the spring of 2020, he reportedly appeared at the home of a councilor of the municipality without announcing himself, and he allegedly made disrespectful remarks about him while he was acting in the course of his duties.
Citizens of Ile-du-Grand-Calumet had called for the resignation of Mayor Newberry. A petition had also circulated, asking for the mayor’s resignation.
