The Meadows in the Sky Parkway, trails above the Columbia viewpoint and the Jade and Eva Lake campgrounds on Mt. Revelstoke National Park will be closed at 3:00 p.m. today, Weds. Oct. 12, until further notice, so fire crews can burn part of the forest 20 km up the parkway.
Crews from Mt. Revelstoke, Glacier and Banff National Park will work with B.C. Wildfire Services tomorrow to dangle a torch from a helicopter to light what they call the Lindmark Prescribed Fire. The idea is to create a fuel break to limit the spread of potential forest fires to the front of Mt. Revelstoke. This fuel break will connect with one that was created in 2020 called the Parkway Bend Prescribed Fire.
"Prescribed fires reduce forest fuels to lessen the severity of wildfires, release nutrients, and allow for a mosaic of ecosystems that support diverse plants and wildlife." Reads an information bulletin from Parks Canada, released Oct. 12.
Smoke will be visible in Revelstoke and on the Trans-Canada Highway.
