The Canadian government announced yesterday that free menstrual products will be available to workers in federally regulated workplaces by year's end.
But locally, since 2020, Northumberland United Way's Period Promise program, supported by Thrive Northumberland, has helped those in need by distributing over 30,000 menstrual hygiene products to individuals, families and non-profit agencies.
In fact, the 2023 Period Promise Northumberland campaign began May 1 and is continuing through the rest of the month. The United Way’s Chelsea Rankin said local residents are encouraged to donate menstrual hygiene products or make a financial donation to keep the program growing.
“The community is so generous and we are so thankful for their support,” said Rankin. “This is a really important cause because periods are just a fact of life, but if you’re living in poverty or vulnerable in other ways, access to necessary menstrual products can be challenging so we are very thankful for all of our drop off locations and everyone who donates.”
Donations can be dropped off in Cobourg at United Way office, Cobourg Public Library, Squishy Goose, Poplars Practitioners, David’s No Frills, Nourish Boutique Spa and Starbucks; and in Port Hope at the Salvation Army, Chamber of Commerce; Colborne at the Lofty Butter Company and Brighton at RE/MAX Quinte.
Rankin said the federal announcement is welcome and one step closer to building healthy communities and improving the well-being for so many people, but added that any local business can pledge support for Period Promise Northumberland anytime.
“It doesn’t just have to be federal buildings,” she remarked. “If you’re a business and want to provide products for your clients or for your patrons that come into your business, you can sign our agreement and commit to offering products for free in your washrooms.”
Businesses can pledge their support at Northumberland United Way’s website mynuw.org or contact the Rankin at crankin@nuw.unitedway.ca.
