One entrepreneur is hoping to change the way many Indigenous vendors sell their products with a new platform.

Amanda Brenard is a member of the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation and an advocate for Indigenous entrepreneurship and art. Brenard created Shawish, a virtual Indigenous marketplace that hosts Indigenous entrepreneurs and artists to create their own shops and upload their products.

Shawish does not charge any transaction or monthly fee, making it affordable and accessible for Indigenous vendors, setting it apart from other marketplaces, Brenard says. Shawish verifies that all vendors listed on the virtual marketplaces are Indigenous, to ensure that products are authentic to the Indigenous culture and that money is going into/remaining in the Indigenous community.
