The occurrences of domestic abuse have been on the rise since the COVID-19 pandemic began back in March 2020.

Carol Seychuk, executive director for the Northern Society for Domestic Peace (NSDP), said that telephone or Zoom isn't a perfect solution for people who need to reach out in an emergency situation.

The NSDP are building a new housing project in Smithers for young mothers in need as well as families and women who are fleeing abusive or aggressive environments at home.

The new development is slated to open in spring of 2021, using the time they have with "building weather" available to them.
