Northern Health COVID-19 numbers continue to rise with last week's case numbers breaking a new record since the delta variant made its way to the north.

Northern health is over capacity, nursing, some doctors and support staff are balking at vaccine mandates, people are protesting hospitals, and as reported in the BC Situation Report and from Health minister Adrian Dix and Dr Bonnie Henry last week: you are 6 times more likely to contract COVID-19 in northern health than in the Greater Vancouver Area.

Smithers, Houston and Dease Lake have been some of the worst hit, with dire vaccination rates and high COVID-19 cases. But there are examples of change in a handful of communities.

Terrace, Nisga’a Territory, and Kitimat have shown higher vaccination rates than is common in the north, and even in the province. Kitimat is the leader with 98% of the community having received their first dose and 82% their second.

Listen to CICK News' interview with Kitimat Mayor Phil Germuth to find out just what they are doing differently.
