No Clearcuts Kingston, a Kingston non-profit residents’ group, has been fighting for Patry Development to halt their proposal to build commercial and residential properties on the Tannery Development near the Cataraqui river. 

The developer wants to build multi-residential and commercial properties on the Tannery site, which would call for the cutting down of over 1800 trees, digging up 400,000 tonnes of Earth, and would be across Belle Island which is sacred Indigenous land.

Richard Lindgren, a lawyer from the Canadian Environmental Lawyer Association (CELA) will be representing NCK at an Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) hearing to grant NCK party status to fully participate in the hearing on February 21st, 2023. 

On September 6th, 2022, Kingston City Council voted no to proceed with the Tannery Development project, which the developer then appealed to the OLT. 

Kerry Hill, Director of No Clearcuts Kingston, says that “we can’t be destroying something that is going to be here long after we’re gone… and is doing so much benefit for the city”.

Other groups supporting the request include Building Kingston’s Future, Friends of the Kingston Inner Harbour, Kingston Field Naturalists, Little Forests Kingston, River First YGK, Seniors for Climate Action Now (SCAN), and 350 Kingston.
