Sherri-Lyn Hill, the newly elected Chief of Six Nations, addressed her goals for the upcoming term for the first time during a media conference today.

Hill won the Six Nations General Election on Nov. 4  by defeating former Chief Steve Williams by a vote of 606 to 444.

During the media conference, Hill spoke on her plans for Six Nations Elected Council and how she hopes to address certain community issues. She says the top priority she believes the community is facing is dealing with mental health and addictions that Six Nations members struggle with.

"My priority is mental health and addictions, to have safe beds, 24 hour services," she said.

"We need to start outreaching to our people more."

She added that housing and access to clean water were other priorities that SNEC will work to address. The community has needs in that health and wellness sector and it's her goal to help provide those services to those community members in need.

"We don't have a detox, we don't have a residential treatment center, we don't have many psychiatrist's, emergency housing. We can go down the list," she said.

"I think when we can sit here and work together and start having these types of programs within the community then people can start healing."

Hill thanked the community for their support and electing her as Six Nations Chief and she says she's fully committed to helping the six nations community work towards these goals she has.

"I understand these are ambitious goals and I'm fully aware that they require hard work, collaboration and dedication. I want to emphasize that I'm here to listen, learn and work alongside each and every one of you. We are a community that thrives when we come together and I'm committed to fostering an environment where your voices are heard, respected and valued."
