Six Nations Elected Council recently announced a new website for accessing information regarding the litigation on the 1784 Haldimand Proclamation and lands: Six Nations Of The Grand River Band Of Indians V. The Attorney General Of Canada And His Majesty The King In Right Of Ontario.
According to the Director of the Six Nations Lands and Research Office Lonnie Bomberry, the court ordered website launched March 14 has information dating back to 1995.
But on May 8-10, two of the three interveners will be making their case in court. Those interveners are the Haudenosaunee Development Institute on behalf of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chief’s Council and the Men’s Fire of Six Nations Grand River Territory.
According to the litigation website, a third intervener the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation says they support the Six Nations of the Grand River to hold Canada and Ontario accountable for failures and broken promises relating to the Haldimand Proclamation.
In addition, they say they wish to ensure their history, rights, and relationship with that territory are accurately presented but that they do not seek compensation or intend to to reduce compensation that Canada and Ontario owe.
Intervenor arguments will be heard May 8-10 and May 12 and the court case is set to take place in 2024.
