In front of a clapping audience, over 100 strong, the new political leadership in Nelson was sworn in at Prestige Lakeside Resort on Tuesday night.

Provincial Court Judge Craig Seacott oversaw the ceremony as the new mayor and six councillors took the oath of office, assuring they would be carrying out their duties in accordance with the law.

Janice Morrison, Nelson's second-ever female mayor, said the moment had been well anticipated in the past three weeks, after it was clear she had defeated incumbent John Dooley with a major victory in October's civic election.

"As the newly elected council, we are all looking forward to building a strong, proactive and inclusive team that will represent our great community for the next four years," Morrison said. "We all have family and friends here to help us celebrate this momentous occasion. Without the support of our families, taking on this mantle of public service would not be possible.

Her new council consists of three councillors from the past term: Jesse Woodward, Rik Logtenberg and Keith Page. The new first-time office holders are Kate Tait, Leslie Payne and Jesse Pinero.
