The Nelson Curling Centre will be closed for the 2023-2024 season.

The City of Nelson, the owner of the building, has told the Curling Centre they will not be able to operate because of safety concerns. Prior to last season, the city was concerned with the ice plant within the building due to its age. A pressure test was performed on the condenser to ensure it would be safe to operate. Despite passing the test, the city informed the curling centre that it would need be replaced for the 2023-2024 season.

Efforts were made to raise funds to replace the condenser over the summer, but the curling centre was unable to complete the process in time. The President of the Nelson Curling Centre Kristina Little says, “we’ve run out of time. It’s a four-month process to replace this component. We can’t have a season this year.”

There are 140 members at the curling centre and, including drop-ins and school programs, over 1,000 people use the facility each year. The closest curling rink is in Castlegar but they won't be able to accommodate everyone. They are hopeful they will be able to replace the condenser for next season.

CJLY made multiple attempts to receive a comment from the City of Nelson but there was not a reply prior to publishing.
