Former Toronto city councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam officially launches their platform for the upcoming Ontario election.
After more than 12 years as city councillor, Wong-Tam decided to run for the NDPs following incumbent MPP Suze Morrison announcing she will not seek re-election.
Their platform focuses on 17 parts - notable inclusions are housing and homelessness, rebuilding the economic vibrancy of the downtown core, affordable healthcare including dental care for all Canadians, childcare, and environmental initiatives.
Several of these focuses are reminiscient of the ones Wong-Tam strove for as a city councillor. In their speech, they mention their proven track record with the riding and what they have brought forth to city council on behalf of the community in the past.
Other parts of the platform focus on launching community-based projects to address violence and crimes against racialized and 2SLGBTQ+ residents and helping new Canadians find work and schooling opportunities.
Wong-Tam is expected to begin their campaign events in Toronto Centre this week.
The full platform is available on their website.
All-candidates meetings are expected to be scheduled in the coming weeks.
Wong-Tam potential win in Toronto Centre would maintain an NDP hold in the traditional Liberal stronghold of the downtown core.
CJRU contacted each candidate in Toronto Centre for a platform update prior to this website and are awaiting a response.
Ontario's election is set for June 2.
More details to come.
