In celebration of National Indigenous History Month, Every One Every Day Kjipuktuk at Gottingen Street is hosting a series of educational, conversational and fun events. Today, tea and Luski (Mi'qmaq bread) were offered as community members gathered to share their history and experience growing up in the area.
The organization's Neighbourhood Project Designer and Operations Specialist Julie Melanson said it is important to share our community history.
"It's important not to forget our history; it's important to not forget where we've all come from, and what people have gone through. We have to recognize and realize the reality of everyone's life and their experiences and honor and cherish those, but also learn from them."
Members of different ages and backgrounds gathered around the table and shared stories of them growing up in the neighbourhood, discussed people they grew up with and shared lessons they learned over the years.
Tamara Desmond, one of the members at the event, said she enjoyed listening to all the different ideas.
"I enjoyed listening to our elders speak and share their knowledge of what was in the past. And I also enjoyed the aspect of bringing things into the current state of being."
Community members and sisters, Sarah Jane Rogers and Cathy Rogers, have lived in the same neighborhood their entire lives. They say these conversations are important to bring people in the community together and to affect change.
Their upcoming events are posted on their schedule.
