The Government of Alberta is investing over $762,000 into opening 40 new shelter spaces for vulnerable women in Calgary through the Mustard Seed.
The spaces will open on Oct. 16, the day the announcement was made, so vulnerable women in Calgary have a place to be safe when winter arrives.
"These are exciting ways for us to be able to accomplish some of the unique work that organizations [like the Mustard Seed] are doing," Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services, stated in a press conference.
Mayor Jyoti Gondek said that work like this critical in Calgary.
"This announcement today is important for those women, and any others, who find themselves in a situation where they need emergency shelter. I am very happy that we are doing this work," Gondek said.
The new shelter spaces will provide 24/7 support to women and aim to make sure the unique problems they face are managed with care, according to Samantha Lowe, Senior Director of Shelter Operations at The Mustard Seed.
"From helping with system navigation, to offering housing case management and counseling, we are committed to providing comprehensive wrap around supports to these women," Lowe said.
