.Officials from MRC Pontiac will be hosting a public meeting regarding the proposed near surface disposal facility (NSDF) at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ site at Chalk River, Ontario, on April 26. If approved, the site would house up to a million cubic metres of low-level nuclear waste, the majority of which is already situated at the Chalk River site, in an engineered mound roughly 1 km from the Ottawa River.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Fort-Coulonge (525 rue Baume). Pontiac Warden Jane Toller said that she would be speaking at the upcoming regulatory hearing for the site at the end of May, but wanted the input of the public as well.

The NSDF project has been going through a lengthy approval process for more than five years at this point, and the upcoming hearing is one of the last opportunities for the public to voice their opinions.

Toller said that the MRC council hadn’t taken a strong enough stand on the issue in the past.
