Surrey Centre MP Randeep Sarai is shedding light on the impact that the killing of a Sikh leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in Surrey is having on the local community and global Sikh diaspora.
In September, the federal government accused the government of India of being involved with Nijjar's death. The Canadian citizen was shot dead in Surrey in June.
The investigation into the killing remains ongoing and is being supported by Canada's intelligence partners in the Five Eyes Alliance—the United States, Great Britain, New Zealand, and Australia.
Sarai cites Canadian government claims of credible intelligence, gathered with the collaboration of these partners, suggesting the involvement of Indian agents in the murder of the Canadian Sikh leader.
“It's a homicide investigation,” according to Sarai. “It's a Canadian citizen who was gunned down in the place of his worship where he was the president and leader of he was exiting his father's day leaving the back parking lot where he was shot.”
Sarai underscored Canada's dedication to maintaining a strong relationship with India through Canada's Indo-Pacific strategy while ensuring justice for the late Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He also mentioned Canada's pursuit of a free trade agreement with India and outlined the considerable effort invested to strengthen ties, including a delegation of ministers attending the G20 in India.
Sarai reiterated that the gravity of the situation is not lost on Canada, with many Indian residents, immigrants, students and their families being impacted, most significantly by the recent measures to suspend visas to Canadian citizens.
