Around 10 volunteers engaged in a cleanup of a Cortes Island beach on Mother's Day organized by the environmental stewardship and education organization Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI).

Executive Director Helen Hall was especially grateful to Cortes Creations, a family business on Cortes Island that sponsored the event along with Hollyhock Learning Leadership Centre.

Hall says this year's beach cleanup was particularly significant as it was held on Mother's Day and it was sponsored by 10,000 Whales. Cortes Creations owner Leslie Mack-Mumford created 10,000 Whales, a first time sponsor of the beach clean up event, when her sons witnessed a high school presentation aimed at engaging young people in marine conservation.

Hall also thanks the federal government for special programs during COVID-19, which supported tourism operators to keep their workers employed by having them collect debris off beaches and from waters up and down the BC coast. She says that's resulted in a net benefit for all people enjoying coastal beaches.
