A campfire ban was placed across the entirety of British Columbia on Monday, with over 340 fires burn throughout the province.

Despite fire season looking positive in the southeast corner where the Kootenays are located, BC Wildfire Service anticipates more fires as the summer progresses.

“In the southeast, we’re quite lucky right now but we’ll start to see more fires as conditions dry out and warm up,” said Matt MacDonald, lead weather forecaster for BC Wildfire Service.

MacDonald joined CJLY to discuss the current state of wildfires in the Kootenays, the rest of BC and what to expect going forward.

The public is reminded to be careful of any activity in the bush whether that be operating a motor vehicle, using tools or any open flame. Resources across the province are slim and any human started fire will be difficult to contain. For up to date information, visit the BC Wildfire website.
