Parks Canada announced that the road that leads to the famed Moraine Lake in Banff National Park will be closed to private vehicles when the road opens up for the season in June.
Jed Cochrane, visitor experience manager at Parks Canada, said the restrictions were put in place largely part to "extreme visitor capacity."
Moraine Lake, one of the most visited areas in Banff National Park, sees many visitors during its on-season, filling its parking lot throughout the day and leading to vehicle congestion.
With the lake located 14 kilometers out of the hamlet of Lake Louise, alternatives have been put in place so visitors can make it to the lake without a lengthy hike. Visitors have the option to reserve a seat on a Parks Canada shuttle out to the lake, take a charter bus, or take a ROAM Transit bus from Banff.
With these restrictions, there are long-term goals in place to help preserve the area's natural beauty, as well as maintaining the quality of visitors' experience.
With less vehicles going through the area, Cochrane says wildlife in the area can move more through the area since that area is a "big wildlife corridor," and to help keep the environment at its natural beauty.
