Mount Sutton is set to receive financial assistance from the Quebec Government to move forward with its four-season mountain development plan.
Mount Sutton is a large tourist attraction for the Town of Sutton — it is a mountain that offers an array of both winter and summer activities. It is a ski resort in the winter but also a nice place for hiking in the summer. But Mount Sutton's plan is to be more inviting to families, offering activities for young kids and adults.
The overall objective of the four-season strategic development plan is to increase the tourism and stimulate the economy of Sutton and surrounding villages. Mount Sutton plans to upgrade some existing outdoor infrastructures and equipment but also install two different types of ziplines. This includes a double zipline, which will become the longest in the region, and a zipline with turns in the trees, which will be the first in North America.
Within this budget, the mountain bike trails will also be significantly upgraded, the ski terrain will be improved, new snowmaking machines and trail maintenance systems will be implemented, as well as some art sculptures will be installed.
Some citizens are ecstatic about this new development saying it's about time Mont Sutton had an upgrade.
Not only will the diversification of the mountain promote more tourism, it will create more jobs in the Eastern Townships, the organization stated.
The development plan has been in discussions since the mountain changed ownership in 2016. Currently, efforts have resulted in raising $10-million in investments. The committee in charge of the new developments hope to achieve their investment goal by 2023.
“All these projects will allow Mont Sutton to enrich and increase its offer of new distinctive outdoor activities as well as develop, improve and upgrade some outdoor infrastructures and existing equipment,” explained Randy Ferguson, communication coordinator for Mount Sutton.
