Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) have approved a contract between Six Nations Housing and Hydro One to have hydro connections made at two duplexes located on Moccasin Trail in Ohsweken.

The duplex development was originally approved in Aug. 2022 and last Dec. SNEC approved a second duplex to also be constructed on the same lot as the first building. At that time Lily-Anne Mt. Pleasant, Acting Director & Financial Control Officer for Six Nations Housing spoke on creating more housing units to deal with the current housing crisis.

"We’re trying to maximize land space, as we all know there isn’t sufficient land on the current Six Nations territory to house the entirety of our membership."

Council approved the agreement in the amount of $23,087.81 and SNEC Acting CEO Nathan Wright will sign the contract to make the deal official.

Mt. Pleasant, says the units are only awaiting the hydro connection to be ready for occupants to move in.

"These duplexes have been ready to go for approximately three or four months now," she said.

"This is that contract to connect all four of the units so that we can get people moved in as soon as possible."

She says that the timeline for when the connection will officially be made is unknown right now and says it can range anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

"Typically, it's about two to six weeks but it really does depend on how many connections are occurring on the territory at the time when our contract gets approved."

SNEC approved the contract between Hydro One and Six Nations housing during the Oct. 16 General Finance meeting and Wright will now sign the agreement for the duplexes on Mocassin Trail in Ohsweken be connected with hydro and ready for occupancy.
