The Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) community is holding a community wellness check-in as the community continues to grieve after Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Officer Const. Grzegorz (Greg) Pierzchala was killed last week.

Pierzchala, 28, was shot and killed in the line of duty on Dec. 27 when he responded to a vehicle collision in Hagersville. According to OPP, two suspects have been charged with first degree murder in connection with his death: Randall McKenzie and Brandi Crystal Lyn Stewart-Sperry.

Andrea King, councilor for MCFN, is hoping the wellness check-in will help community members to deal during the emotional time. King said that the community has members that were directly impacted by the violence that took place, both as victims as well as Mckenzie being from MCFN.

"We're coming together to ensure everyone is okay," she said.

MCFN have offered its community members the safe space multiple times since Dec. 27.

King who was very emotional offered condolences to Pierzchala's family and friends as well as his OPP colleagues.

"We need to show love to eachother and that kindness and resiliency and of course again sending that same support to our fallen officer. We rely on the police to come and protect us and that ultimate sacrifice."

She said that it's vital for the community to come together and help each other in the grieving process.

The community wellness check-in will take place today (Jan. 5) at the MCFN Community Centre from 2-5 p.m. Members of the Six Nations Crisis Team will be in the community to assist anyone who may find themselves needing wellness supports or someone to talk to. Elders and Knowledge Keepers will also be in attendance for support.
