Newly announced Liberal candidate Sophie Chatel spoke with CHIP 101.9 yesterday about her background and her plans for the upcoming election on Sept. 20.

Chatel, who resides in Cantley, is trained as a lawyer and a certified public accountant and has worked in the federal government, as well as international organizations:

Chatel said that one of her priorities for the region would be improving internet and cell phone connectivity throughout the entire Pontiac.

“I am shocked at how many houses and businesses we have that are not connected to high-speed internet," she said.

She also said she would like to improve public transit and affordable housing throughout the region. Chatel had considered getting involved in politics back in 2015, but ultimately decided to continue with her career in finance:

She said that her candidacy process was very quick, being announced just a day after outgoing Liberal MP Will Amos announced that he would not be seeking reelection. Amos’s announcement came in the wake of two high-profile blunders he made earlier in the year: he was caught naked in a parliamentary video conference in April and then seen urinating in a coffee cup on camera in May.

Chatel is also scheduled to attend CHIP 101.9’s candidates debate on Aug. 25 at the Pontiac Conference Centre in Fort-Coulonge.
