Crazy Horse Marine Services on Cortes Island has been in business for seven years, building docks, ramps, and moorings for boats, along with salvaging sunken vessels.

Owner Jeremy Hope says business is up these days, but costs during the COVID-19 pandemic have increased considerably. He says that in the last year, the cost of shipping needed materials via containers from Asia to the west coast of Canada has doubled—from $4,000 to $8,000 per container.

Adding to the increasing costs is the time it takes for materials to arrive. Hope is finding that he now has to place orders far more in advance to keep pace with demand.
