Xavier Lusignan of Mansfield dominated the Canadian Junior Weightlifting Championships last weekend (March 20-21) by winning three gold medals in the 89 kg category.

The virtual competition took place simultaneously across the country. In his first appearance, Lusignan, represented Ontario given his membership with the Pembroke Club and lifted 128 kg at the snatch, which was enough to win the gold medal in this discipline. In the other competition, the clean and jerk, he managed a lift of 161 kg, which put him far ahead of the other competitors in total weight lifted for both categories, allowing him to get a third gold medal. This performance opens the door for the Mansfield athlete to the World Weightlifting Championship, which is expected to take place this May in Saudi Arabia, depending on the pandemic situation.

Naomie surprises at her first participation
Xavier was not Mansfield’s only athlete in this competition, as his sister Naomie also competed in the women’s 71kg category. One of the youngest competitors, Naomie managed to win two bronze medals in the snatch and for the total weight lifted. Naomie is also the only athlete born in 2005 to have won two medals in this category, the other athletes were born in 2001, 2002 and 2003. She will therefore have the chance to participate again next year.
