A 39-year-old Quebec man is facing a number of charges after a shooting incident outside Trail hospital on Tuesday night.
Police told KCR News that the suspect had been admitted to the hospital after being involved in a motor vehicle incident earlier in the evening. He proceeded to discharge himself, and then began acting erratically. According to Sgt. Mike Wicentowich with Trail RCMP, the man had tried to gain entry to the ambulance station when officers arrived.
"They attempted to verbally engage him, when the man suddenly drew a handgun and fired upon the officers multiple times," Wicentowich said.
Three paramedics, who were bystanders during the incident, as well as the officers could have been hit – but through what police calls a combination of training and "luck," the suspect was taken down with a taser before anyone was hurt.
The man is facing weapons and attempted murder charges.
According to police, the man appears to have no connection to the West Kootenay region, and an investigation is underway into what led up to the situation.
