June 1 will mark the first ever Seniors Expo to be hosted in Loyalist Township.
The expo, titled "Aging Well Together," aims to help residents in the area connect to resources, and find their own healthy aging plans. The event will also be celebrating Seniors Month.
The Loyalist Family Health Team (LFHT) prepared the expo to share resources with residents so they can weave together their own personalized plan for aging well at home. Residents will get the chance to meet and learn from over 50 service providers and vendors including social clubs, health and wellness groups, and connections to public support, subsidized social services\and private home care providers as well. A wide range of workshops for residents will also be taking place throughout the day.
Dr. Mary Kate Gazendam from the LFHT noted that finding a personalized support system is vital to aging at home. Gazendam explained there's not a one-size-fits-all plan and that LFHT is there to help residents access the necessary resources they need to make their own.
"Despite disability or frailty, we believe there's pretty much a plan for everybody that they can pull together. We hope to enable that, and empower people to do that," said Gazendam.
Gazendam explained how passionate the LFHT is about helping people age well at home. She noted how important it is for some to be able to continue living at home as they age.
"We want to help people thrive at home in their community as they age in order to avoid institutionalization."
The Seniors Expo will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the WJ Henderson Recreation Centre in Amherstview on June 1.
