Kate Mizenka of Elk Root Conservation in Valican, BC was recognized with the Suzy Hamilton Legacy Award last month.
Established by the Osprey Community Foundation in 2016 after the death of environmental activist, journalist, founder of the West Kootenay EcoSociety Suzy Hamilton, this annual award is given to a female identifying environmental advocate in the West Kootenay’s.
Mizenka is the founder of Elk Root Conservation and currently works as the board chair and director of Farm, Orchard, and Apiary. Elk Root is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is “to alleviate food insecurity and inspire ecological stewardship by offering inclusionary and empowering learning opportunities through research, innovation, and hands-on education at Elk Root Conservation’s Educational Demonstration Farm.”
Some of the projects she is being recognized for include the Sustainable Apiary Model, the Pollinator Demonstration Gardens and the Native Plant Educational Garden, Nursery & Seed Library.
