Two local 17-year-old boxers Lola Brouillette and Riel Martinez have recently earned spots with the Canadian national team.

At a selection camp in Montreal earlier this month, Brouillette qualified first in her weight class and will be travelling to Columbia to represent Canada in August. Martinez ranked second in his division, earning him the top alternate position.

Both fighters train under head coach Jesse Pineiro at Nelson Boxing and Athletics Club. Pineiro has been coaching boxing for more than 15 years; he also owns the gym, coaches the BC provincial team and is a city councilor in Nelson.

In preparation for her trip to Columbia, Brouillette will be fighting in the main event this weekend at Nelson Boxing Club’s fight night. The event will be held at the Rod and Gun Club Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.

Martinez will be attending another camp in Montreal later this month.

To help fund the Montreal and Columbia trips, the Nelson Boxing Club is accepting donations. To learn more, contact nelsonboxingclub@gmail.com or visit the club at 685 Baker St. in downtown Nelson.
