Local barber hosts 40th birthday fundraiser for Peruvian food security

Chris Brach, owner of Merchant Barber, is celebrating his 40th birthday by raising money for the Andean people struggling with food security. The fundraiser event for the Peruvian Wisdom Project is being held at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson this Saturday.

Brach was inspired to support this cause after a trip to Peru in October 2022. The Peruvian Wisdom Project aims to bring health, stability, and sustainability to Andean communities. Living at such a high altitude makes agriculture difficult, causing most people to struggle with malnutrition.

Money raised will go towards building sustainable greenhouses, a food processing centre, a dormitory for volunteers and a house for the property managers. Donations can be made through gofundme.

The show at the Capitol Theatre on Oct. 21, titled Strings Attached, will feature two local musicians, Shawn Fisher and Fiona Armstrong. Tickets can be purchased on the Capitol Theatre website.
