Sustainable Kingston is hosting the 6th annual Climate Change Symposium

Several speakers will be in attendance for the symposium including the Hon. Catherine McKenna, former Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, and Paul Taylor, former Executive Director of Foodshare Toronto and an anti-poverty activist.

The event will be emceed by Ali Hassan, a broadcaster, performer, comedian and author. Sustainable Kingston says it was crucial to invite people from all walks of life to participate in the symposium to emphasize the importance of making education about climate change accessible to people. A background in science is not needed to learn about and to understand conversations and discussions surrounding climate change and the ongoing climate crisis.

Geoff Hendry, chief operating officer of Sustainable Kingston, will be moderating a panel with four additional guest speakers. He briefly describes the background of these panel speakers and what insights they may bring to attendees:

Kingston was the first city in Ontario to declare a climate emergency back in March of 2019. Since then, the City of Kingston has established and launched several initiatives such as purchasing and using two electric buses that operate for Kingston Transit, having 48 public EV charging stations, planting more than 37,000 trees on city properties since 2018 and more.

Kingston also has a goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2040.

The virtual event on Jan. 19 begins at 9 a.m. EST and free for anyone to attend.
