Leading up to World Bicycle Day this Friday, the City of Kingston's annual Cycling Week celebration is running through Saturday.
“Using a bicycle is one of the best ways to not only be physically fit, it’s great for keeping greenhouse gasses down, it’s a show of prosperity and interest in making our world and Kingston better…H.G. Wells has a saying I'll paraphrase, Every time I see an adult on a bicycle I no longer despair for humankind,” Cycle Kingston Board Member Hal Cain said.
In-person activities return this year including: free roll-in breakfasts for those who use sustainable transportation, a ride with the mayor, and in honour of World Bicycle Day, Cycle Kingston will celebrate in front of city hall with speeches, and live music.
“Kingston is one of the best places I’ve lived for cycling…lots of trails, fairly easy roads to navigate, cycling infrastructure makes it a little more comfortable for some people,” Cain added.
June 3 was declared World Bicycle Day by the United Nations in 2018 to recognize the benefits of bicycles to humanity.
Cycling Week leads into the Commuter Challenge next week, a national initiative encouraging use of sustainable transportation including: public transit, walking, cycling and more.
