Cortes Island is enjoying many returns to the arts this summer, as COVID-19 restrictions lift, magic is filling the Old Schoolhouse. Jane Newman had applied to have her art show exhibit at the art gallery for the summer of 2020.
“The same phone call that they told me that they had approved the show, the exhibit, they also said, but we're not having any because of Covid,” she shared.
The artist continued to create over the past two years and decided to keep the name, "Ordinary Magic," for this year’s first Old Schoolhouse art opening night event since 2019.
“There is some human form and a few other sort of recognizable things that you'd be able to see in these assemblages,” Newman says, describing her sculptural work.
Newman rescues discarded copper to utilize in her assemblages and mixed-medias.
Ordinary Magic is open Fridays, Saturday, and Sundays July 1-July 10 at the Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery in Whaletown. There are three events associated with this art show in addition to the show itself; the opening night July 1, an artist talk on July 7 and a workshop in the Cortes Museum Garden on July 5. After the show closes, Newman’s work will be available to view online at janenewman.ca.
