BC's provincial health officer says officials are investigating whether a COVID-19 outbreak at a mink farm in the Fraser Valley, just outside Vancouver, could affect the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.
Eight workers on the unidentified farm tested positive for the virus on Monday. That was followed by positive results in five mink samples the following day.
Dr. Bonnie Henry says a similar outbreak at a mink farm in Denmark led to a mutation of the virus. As a result, all of the mink were culled to ensure the mutated virus could not spread. Henry says there is concern that if the virus mutates too dramatically, COVID-19 vaccines will no longer be effective. She says that's why the Fraser Valley farm is on a strict quarantine and an investigation is underway.
Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry:
The genome results are expected next week.
