Former executive director of the Woodland Cultural Centre (WCC) Janis Monture has become the new CEO of the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) in Ottawa.

Starting Feb. 27, Monture took over the helm of the CMA and vacated her role at the Woodland Cultural Centre.

As the first Indigenous person to hold the position she hopes to take her cultural background lens and apply it to the national organization to open perspectives. But she also hopes to shine a light on the many missing communities in museums, such as BIPOC communities, while building up the museum sector.

With Monture’s departure from the WCC, the centre recently announced that Heather George will take over as the new executive director for the WCC and assumes her role as of March 20.  George is no stranger to the WCC and has been a guest curator with the centre for the last year and a half. In addition, George is on leave as the curator of Indigenous Histories at the Canadian Museum of History.
