Thursday will see the debut of the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association’s Ag Innovation Spotlight event.

The inaugural event will be at the Grand River Raceway in Elora with several educational workshops on innovations in farming, and Q-and-A's will be offered with experts within agriculture.

Alan Kruszel, an Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association board member, was quick to share what Wellington County offers in terms of agriculture.

"Oh my goodness, Wellington County is pretty much a powerhouse when it comes to agriculture. It's one of the biggest counties in terms of dairy production," Kruszel said.

"I think they have the highest number of dairy farms in all of the province of Ontario. They have enormous numbers of chicken farms, hog farms as well as incredibly productive soils for crop production," he added.

The event will showcase advancements in farming that Kruszel says have revolutionized the field.

"There's been so many changes its hard to figure out where to start. There are people alive today who were farming with horses and milking a half dozen cows, and we've come so far since then with these advancements and the machinery and technology," Kruszel said.

"Farming has become so much more digitized than it once was. It's really quite incredible," he added.

Kruszel stated manure management has been a focus in Wellington County and abroad.

The event runs from 5-8 p.m. and will feature a barbecue to kick things off.
