Temporary housing is now available for displaced tenants from the Coachman Apartments.
Through BC Housing, the province has bought the old Mumfords Lodge property to provide 19 affordable homes for displaced tenants.
In December 2022, units in the apartments flooded due to frozen pipes, though prior to that, tenants had also been dealing with black mould throughout the building.
Tenants who were displaced in December were provided with hotel rooms as a temporary fix with extended funding from Emergency Support Services and BC Housing until Jan. 19 which was acquired with help from Ksan Society. In addition to securing extended hotel room stays, Ksan also helped nine households find permanent housing.
"With today's announcement, the remaining tenants will again have a place to call home. The City of Terrace will continue to work with the provincial government to increase the much-needed housing stock in our community. I want to thank Minister Kahlon and Premier Eby for their commitment and hard work in supporting the residents of the Coachman Apartments," Mayor Sean Bujtas said of the announcement.
Through $2.5 million from a Homeless Action Plan grant to buy the property, tenants can move in immediately.
"That's great news! Every new housing they can come up with is needed here in Terrace. Life is hard enough with the worry of a place to call home," one resident commented on a social media post from the city.
Though long-term plans for the building are still in development, the city is allowing immediate occupancy to get tenants into safe housing as soon as possible.
